Intuitive eating is an evidence-based approach to cultivating a satisfying relationship to food. It consists of ten principles designed to honour health by respecting the body’s physical and emotional needs. It supports you to use hunger, fullness, and satisfaction cues to guide eating.
Embodiment means fully living in your body and having the capacity to hang out with how you’re feeling from the “inside-out”. Practicing embodiment can soften some of the critical inner dialogue that we may have about our bodies and body image.
Intuitive eating & embodiment may help if you’re wanting to foster a stronger connection between mind and body.
Signs you may benefit from intuitive eating
- You unintentionally go long periods of time without eating.
- You often eat while you’re distracted.
- You often eat until you feel uncomfortably full.
- You have difficulty identifying different emotions.
- You turn to food for comfort when you’re feeling stressed, overwhelmed, or bored.
- You ignore your body’s desire for physical activity or rest.
- You describe yourself as spending more time in your “head” than in your body.
- You intellectualize or talk through your feelings rather than feeling them.
- You feel embarassed talking about your relationship with food or how you feel in your body.
Embodiment is the root of a peaceful relationship with food & body
I believe that having a peaceful relationship with food and body is completely possible and that practicing embodiment supports this. Embodiment means fully living in your body. It means being aware of and able to tolerate a wide range of sensations. It’s a balance of noticing your body from the “inside out” and the “outside in”.
Signs that you're ready for intuitive eating & embodiment
- You want to prioritize taking time for meals to nourish your body.
- You want to be able to identify and honour hunger & fullness cues.
- You want to understand what emotions are contributing to food cravings and learn ways to take care of yourself when difficult emotions arise.
- You want to respect your body’s desire for movement and rest.
- You want to balance the “thinking” part of you with the “feeling” part of you.
- You’re open to getting more comfortable with expressing your feelings about food & body in a safe space.
My Approach
So… what does this work actually look like?
Well, I mentioned that intuitive eating is a practice and so I spend a lot of time in session guiding you through different practices and activities to get to know your body in a different way.
This work usually involves exploring uncomfortable feelings and physical sensations (like hanging out with tension, tightness, fluttery and wobbly sensations inside).
It might seem a little scary at the beginning – this is common! I totally get that and I’ll support you through using different tools and strategies. We move at a pace that feels safe for your body and mind.
I bring a gentle curiousity (and playfulness!) to our work together. I also bring together my experience with nutrition, mind, and body to do this work.
Nutrition
I complete a nutrition assessment and offer you feedback on how you’re doing with meeting your body’s nutrition needs. I work with you to brainstorm ideas and come up with a rough plan to help nourish your body.
Mind
We explore the beliefs that you have about food and your body and we connect to the feelings you have around this. I support you to unlearn unhelpful beliefs around food, body size, and ability. We move towards self-compassion and appreciation of your here-and-now body.
Body
I help you to reconnect with your body's cues of hunger and fullness. We practice eating activities together to offer your body a different experience with food. We find ways new ways to take care of your body.
